A company situated in Lithuania began with screening and characterisation of restriction endonucleases in 1975. More than 10 000 bacterial species have been tested and over 2000 restriction endonucleases found. Since then Fermentas has been known as a company with largest collection of REases in the world.
Fermentas is in possesion of 30 % of all known restriction endonucleases described in REBASE (Restriction Enzyme Database).
Over the last few years Fermentas has also been manufacturing products for electrophoresis, molecular biology kits and transfection reagents.
